Flexible sustainability - StoTherm AimS® facade insulation system

The highly versatile StoTherm AimS® facade insulation system provides a helping hand in many areas: protecting the environment and conserving resources, protecting the climate, and promoting the circular economy.

StoTherm AimS® is a universal solution that delivers more sustainability than standard facade insulation systems – and its versatile configuration options allow it to accommodate all kinds of structural requirements. To date, it is the only facade insulation systems to feature coatings (base coat, finishing render, and biomimetic facade paint) based partially on renewable raw materials. The binders in these cement-free coatings consist of 30% pine oil (obtained from timber processing waste), cutting down on fossil raw materials and ensuring lower carbon emissions. The coatings can be combined with a whole variety of insulation boards – and if a project uses mineral wool boards (WLS 035 stone wool insulation boards or WLS 040 Sto-Speed Lamella Type II plus), the result is a non-combustible EWIS that is suitable for high-rise buildings and is certified with the Blue Angel eco-label (RAL-UZ 140). The coatings are also organically bound, making this version of StoTherm AimS both crack-proof and impact-proof.

EPS board without fossil raw materials

Another system version combines coatings based on renewable raw materials with the new Insulation Board Sto-Dämmplatte Top32 Biomass. The base materials used to produce this EPS board are obtained exclusively from organic waste materials (using the biomass balance method). As a result, the process of manufacturing the certified board does not use any natural gas or mineral oil and its carbon emissions are around two-thirds lower than comparable products – a fact that is recognised in sustainability certifications. Compared to equivalent standard systems, the entire system uses a remarkable 80% fewer fossil base materials and emits 30% less carbon dioxide during its manufacture.

Fixing without adhesive

The system also offers advantages when it comes to the circular economy, as StoFix Circonic insulation fixings allow both the biomass-balanced EPS insulation board and stone wool insulation boards to be fixed using purely mechanical methods. This adhesive-free installation method means that components can be sorted according to type during demolition, making them suitable for recycling.

Natural protection against algae and fungi – without biocides

The eco-friendly insulation system is rounded off with the cement-free finishing render Stolit AimS and the biomimetic facade paint StoColor Lotusan AimS. 30% of the binders for both is based on pine oil derived from timber processing industry waste. The paint’s lotus effect ensures that rain simply rolls directly off the surface of the facade. Dirt particles and microorganisms find it difficult to adhere to the surface and are washed away by rain. This self-cleaning effect, produced entirely without the use of biocidal film protection, creates a natural defence against algae and fungi.

Versatile quality without compromise

The versatile nature of StoTherm AimS® allows the system to create facade insulation that is sustainable in every respect: with its renewable raw materials and lack of cement, it conserves resources and reduces carbon emissions. It can be installed without adhesive, allowing its components to be sorted by type – and its durable, crack-proof, and impact-proof features ensure it will last for a long time before it needs to be renovated.
